History of Camden

Welcome to the City of Camden, New Jersey! Camden is a thriving urban center with state-of-the-art educational and medical facilities and diverse, vibrant neighborhoods

The historic City of Camden, just across the Delaware River from Philadelphia, continues to offer numerous exciting housing opportunities. Camden’s location between the Delaware and Cooper Rivers, and its proximity to Philadelphia and Manhattan, contributed to the early rise of industry within the area. During the 1920s Camden was a leader in industrial expansion, urban growth, and immigration.

Today, Camden is a city on the rise with many exciting new developments in transportation, education and housing.  With advances in regional public transportation, Camden is South Jersey’s largest transportation hub. New improvements to NJ Transit buses, RiverLINE, RiverLink Ferry and PATCO High Speed Rail Lines bring residents, visitors and commuters to and from Camden every day. Advances in public transportation also help to carry thousands of students to the city’s quality educational and medical facilities. In the fall of 2010, Cooper University Hospital and Rowan University and broke ground on South Jersey’s first medical school in over a decade. Rutgers University-Camden also began construction on a new 350 bed graduate dormitory in Downtown Camden. Rowan University at Camden and Camden County College also provide downtown with a vibrant university atmosphere.

With educational facilities and businesses moving into the City, housing developments are on the rise. Historic apartments and row homes are being renovated in the Cooper-Grant neighborhood, and the Cooper Plaza ane Lanning Square neighborhoods. Residents can also enjoy views of Philadelphia at  the newly constructed Dranoff property: The Victor. Whether living in student dormitories, a newly designed house Downtown or a rehabilitated row home, Camden offers something for everyone!
